What the facility does

Analysis platform of organic contaminants (e.g., flame retardants) in biological samples and sediments (e.g. tissue, blood, eggs).

Areas of expertise

Flame retardants are added to numerous consumer products in order to reduce fire risks. Research on the impact of exposure to halogenated flame retardants on animal health is a political priority in Quebec and Canada. Professor Jonathan Verreault’s laboratory has a comprehensive platform for preparing samples and conducting cutting-edge analyses in order to identify and quantify various flame retardants (polybromodiphenyl ethers and a series of emerging compounds) in biological tissues.

Equipment Function
Platform for preparing samples (Total-Rapid-Prep, Fluid Management Systems, Watertown, MA, USA) and gas chromatography coupled with a single quadripole mass spectrometry. Measure a series of high-environmental-priority halogenated flame retardants (35 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners and 13 emerging compounds) in biological samples.
