The Stone Centre at Vancouver General Hospital is a remarkable facility dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of kidney stone disease.  The significance of this research centre is exciting. Worldwide, there are few such facilities and this is the first dedicated to kidney stone disease in Canada. The Centre places basic science researchers and clinicians side-by-side, a unique feature that facilitates the immediate translation of laboratory results.

Function

Atomic absorption spectrophotometer

Elemental analysis of fluids, including urine and serum.

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer microscopy unit

Analysis of chemical, structural and kinetic information of crystals, proteins, and other molecules and compounds found in liquids or on surfaces. This equipment has a diverse range of applications including polymers/materials, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemicals and forensics.

Drip flow chambers

Allows for the study of bacterial biofilm formation on surfaces under flow conditions. 

Centre for Disease Control biofilm reactor

Allows for the analysis of bacterial biofilm formation on up to 24 different biomaterial samples.
