Aquaculture Centre of Excellence (ACE)

Lethbridge College, Lethbridge, Alberta
What the facility does

Aquatic- and aquaponic-based research into aquaculture practices specifically adapted to northern geographical locations

Areas of expertise

The applied research conducted through the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence (ACE) accomplishes major goals that benefit our internal and external stakeholders. ACE serves industry, develops innovative technologies, disseminates knowledge, develops the present and future workforce, promotes direct application of research results, creates partnerships with industry to sustain economic development, and increases institutional capacity for contract applied research and other service activities to the community, business and industry.

The facility is providing effective biological solutions to drastically improve water quality for Canada's rural population and provides a biological, ecologically sound solution to controlling water hyacinth and combatting waterway obstruction and ecosystem degradation on a global scale. ACE is also an industry leader in refining and developing aquaculture recirculation methods that will allow for the production of economical, high-yield, protein-rich, quality food while minimizing the effect on the natural environment. The principles and technological methods could be applied to most areas of the world and help alleviate the current shortage of protein-rich food. To support industry producers, ACE develops an aquaculture "code of practices" related to waste collection and managing effluent and discharge from aquaculture facilities will aid in minimizing impacts on natural aquatic ecosystems as the industry grows. This technology is also applied to other areas of industry such as livestock feedlots, water treatment plants, etc.
