Water System (WSYS) Pilot Flow Loop

University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario
What the facility does

Testing and validating water treatment and other process technologies using a pilot scale flow loop system.

Areas of expertise

The Water System (WSYS) Pilot Flow Loop specializes in the modelling of treatment technologies, primarily through the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). We believe that if a system cannot be modelled, then it is not fully understood. However, modelling requires validation, and for this reason we also have a pilot scale water flow loop system to test technologies and validate our models. The flow loop is fully automated and can handle a flow rate of up to 30 gpm of continuous operation. The system can flow to waste or be run in a recirculating fashion so that we can contain and use toxic chemicals. The flow loop is modular, so it can accommodate many different technologies. Furthermore, the system is fully automated and we can use it to test / validate equipment at specific well-controlled operating conditions and for long-term testing (e.g., weeks). Some examples of technologies for validation and long-term performance testing are: UV reactor treatment, membrane systems, dissolved air flotation, filtration, and chemical treatment. This list is for example purposes only. We can accommodate many different technologies. As mentioned above, our researchers specialize in system modelling, and we can develop models of the technology being tested to enhance the understanding of the technology, with the goal of optimizing system performance.
