Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Facility

McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario
What the facility does

Provides high quality nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data, analysis, and education to solve chemical, biochemical and materials science problems.

Areas of expertise

McMaster has one of the world’s best-equipped nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facilities. These facilities harness the power of NMR spectroscopy to answer questions about the specific physical and chemical properties of samples with atomic scale resolution.

NMR spectroscopy is uniquely capable of studying kinetic and dynamic properties and it complements many other techniques in establishing the structure of samples. NMR provides the tools to elucidate the molecular structure of your complex natural product, identify minor impurities, determine the specific chemical modification made to a polymer, gain better understanding of an important protein dynamical process, or study the details of the breakdown in lithium-ion battery cathode materials.

Because NMR spectroscopy is a nondestructive technique, precious samples can be recovered after testing is completed.

Research services

External clients:

  • Provide timely, high quality, traceable NMR data.
  • Provide data analysis and technical report services.
  • Verify the molecular structure and purity of reagents and products.
  • Identify and quantify chemical impurities.
  • Consult with clients on new and challenging problems.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with client samples, data, reports and discussions.

Internal McMaster users:

  • Train students, post-docs and other researchers to acquire, process and interpret their own NMR data.
  • Consult with researchers when they encounter new and challenging problems and advise them on the best course of action.
  • Implement new NMR experimental techniques to either improve on the established methods, or to introduce entirely new capabilities.
