Hibernia Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Laboratory

Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
What the facility does

Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) screening, reservoir and fluid characterization, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interactions, pore network micro model studies, core floods, reservoir simulation

Areas of expertise

The Hibernia Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Research Group is a multidisciplinary team of researchers dedicated to providing laboratory and simulation support to the EOR activities of the oil and gas industry located offshore Newfoundland and Labrador, and to solving fundamental problems of multiphase flow. The group encompasses researchers from the areas of pore-scale physics, reservoir engineering, mathematics, rock mechanics and sedimentology.

Our research aims to experimentally and mathematically investigate and compare the use of CO2, and other gases of interest, for oil recovery considering offshore Newfoundland specific conditions. The laboratory performs experimental investigations of fluid-fluid and fluid-rock interactions during the recovery of oil, including: Coreflooding - high-pressure/high-temperature, two phase and three-phase steady-state core-flooding apparatus. This apparatus is capable of handling experiments with pressures up to 10,000 psi and temperatures up to 200°C. The system is capable of carrying out simultaneous injection and recirculation of fluids at reservoir conditions. A range analytical equipment is also available to provide fluid behaviour data. Visualization Studies – setup allows for observations at the pore scale (um to mm) and the core scale (mm to cm) at reservoir conditions (6,000 psi and 120°C).
