Centre for Neuroscience Studies

Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario
What the facility does

Basic science research, clinical collaborative research, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Areas of expertise

The Centre for Neuroscience Studies (CNS) research spans basic science to systems research, cognitive and behavioural work and clinical research and applications. The CNS is home to numerous laboratories located in all three hospitals; Kingston General Hospital, Hotel Dieu Hospital and Providence Care Hospital. The MR Facility is available for internal and external users. This state-of-the-art facility uses advanced imaging techniques to investigate both healthy people and patients with neurological disease. All laboratories are available and set up for external use and/or collaborations, including technical personnel where required.

Equipment

Function

Queen’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging Facility

Siemens Prisma Magnetic Resonance Imaging system

Whole-body PRISMA MRI system for human and animal studies.  Fully equipped for functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, anatomical imaging, proton spectroscopy, and variants of these methods. Includes two-way communication system and physiological monitoring equipment

Sham MRI Lab

Sham MRI

Replica of a typical whole-body MRI system, with the exception of having zero magnetic field.  This system is for behavioural testing prior to fMRI studies, training participants, and familiarizing participants with the MRI environment prior to fMRI studies.

This system includes duplicates of all of the peripheral equipment for fMRI studies, as listed above.
