Hybrid Virtual Environment 3D (Hyve-3D)

Université de Montréal, Montréal, Québec
What the facility does

The laboratory houses a virtual reality system that does not require glasses and enables the collaborative creation of objects and environments through 3D sketches

Areas of expertise

Hybrid Virtual Environment 3D
The laboratory houses an innovative patented virtual reality system that enables local and remote collaboration for creating objects and environments through 3D sketches, permitting users to interact naturally with creations using the 3D cursor. Through a unique concave-spherical screen and an original projection with a trompe l’oeil effect that is not 360 degrees, the system immerses participants in a full-scale representation without the need to use intrusive glasses. Natural and intuitive interaction is achieved by moving tablets or smart phones without any trackers, combining actions on the multi-touch screen that enables drawing in 3D, manipulating these drawings or imported 3D geometries and navigating the environment in an embodied manner. Multiple users can collaborate with the system whether they are located in the same lab each with a 3D cursor, are remotely interconnected between several systems or are connected asymmetrically with non-immersive systems using a simple laptop. The lab is designed for creative fields such as architecture, design, engineering and film, but also for visualization, medicine, chemistry and science.
