The Brain in Action Laboratory

University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta
What the facility does

Sensorimotor control and motor/cognitive interactions.

Areas of expertise

We investigate how the brain processes and integrates sensory and motor information — in particular, how vision and hapsis (touch) guide our arm and hand movements for reaching and grasping. We are also interested in understanding the complex interactions of the motor system with cognitive processes such as language, memory and spatial abilities. We use human psychophysics, behavioural measures, including eye and hand kinematics, and cerebral blood flow to infer brain function. Our research includes healthy and neurological populations.

Research services

Motion capture (body and gaze), functional transcranial Doppler sonography, EEG/EMG.

Sectors of application
  • Healthcare and social services
  • Life sciences, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment

Equipment

Function

Optotrak Certus motion-capture system

High-resolution, low-volume, motion-capture system tracks motion of infrared-light-emitting diodes (IREDS) with accuracy of 0.03mm.

SR Research EyeLink II Eye Tracker

Gaze-tracking camera. Two independent, head-mounted eye cameras plot direction of gaze (0.5-degree accuracy) by tracking the motion of the pupils. Gaze direction can be plotted as emanating from a virtual avatar (using MotionMonitor software integrated with the Optotrak motion-capture system) or as an overlay on the visual scene as captured from a head-mounted Scene camera.

Basler A602f Camera

High-speed camera capable of capturing video at 100 fps; fully integrated with Optotrak motion-capture system/software.

Avatar EEG/EMG

Portable eight-channel EEG recorder; can also be used for EMG capture.

Compumedics Doppler-Box X

Portable Doppler sonography system is used as a functional transcranial Doppler (fTCD) device to monitor cerebral blood flow non-invasively.
