Research in heat transfer and fluid mechanics (numerical and experimental), expertise in thermal energy storage, phase change materials, thermal management, renewable energy and applied thermal engineering.
The Laboratory of Applied Multiphase Thermal Engineering (LAMTE) specializes in both fundamental and applied thermal fluid research. The main area of expertise is in phase change heat transfer processes and materials for use in thermal energy storage and/or temperature management systems. This makes LAMTE the only laboratory in the country directly dedicated to the study and applications of phase change processes from the heat transfer side of the process.
The expertise extents to applied thermal processes with a lot of work done on temperature management of electronic components. Research problems are tackled experimentally and numerically (finite element, finite volume, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)) and lead to design of innovative solutions, also performed in the lab.
Research related to ocean engineering (tidal energy, sensor design, etc.) is also performed, mainly through the use of advanced CFD to study such systems and help optimize designs.
Since 2007, the expertise of the LAMTE has also be sought out by industrial partners, big and small, such as Intel, Raytheon, Pratt & Whitney, the US Army Lab and OceanSonics.
