We are committed to seeing old and new technologies through fresh eyes for cultural, social, and economic benefit. |
The Studio for Critical Making |
A research facility that explores how humanities-based modes of critical inquiry – like the arts and ethics – can be directly applied to building more engaging product concepts and information technologies. The lab works to replace the traditional engineering goals of efficiency, speed or usability with more complex cultural, social and human-oriented values. |
Studio for Extensive Aesthetics (SEA) |
SEA investigates the roles of art, design and technology in contemporary society. The studio focuses on the cultural mechanics and aesthetics of the network and the data produced by it. Transdisciplinary in nature, SEA operates through artistic and computational means to produce artworks and experimental platforms. |
Chair in Indigenous Studies |
Research focuses on the efforts of contemporary Indigenous artists to create space for their own discourse and to access institutions of the art world that had previously excluded them. The work will generate a large research archive with significant potential for use by researchers, teachers, students, artists, and others. |
Material Matters |
Material Matters of Emily Carr University supports the community of people and enterprise interested in 3D printing, emergent technology, media, programming, manufacturing, design and creative innovation. |
