Integration of human cognitive systems with visualization, modelling and simulation.

Areas of expertise

The objective of the VSIM Centre is to advance fundamental and applied knowledge through interdisciplinary research that integrates human cognitive systems with leading-edge visualization, modelling and simulation. Applications areas include the development and integration of new technologies for advancing human-in-the-loop systems and virtual training within the aerospace, transportation and education sectors.

Specialized lab Equipment Function
Advanced Cognitive Engineering Lab Immersive simulators Its mission is to discover fundamental principles of human perception and cognition and to apply these principles to the design, implementation and evaluation of advanced human-machine systems
Cognitive Modelling Lab   It supports the efforts of those involved in cognitive modelling, including building cognitive models, building systems for creating cognitive models, developing better systems for testing cognitive models, doing the research to verify cognitive models, finding real-world applications for cognitive models and promoting the use of cognitive models
Applied Dynamics Lab Motion platform, motion capture This lab combines a focus on mathematical modelling and simulation with core strengths in the areas of multi-body dynamics, vehicle dynamics and shipboard helicopter operation to perform leading-edge theoretical and applied research in these areas
Carleton Immersive Media Studio Immersive environments, 3-D modelling and rendering systems The VSIM architecture team examines and uses emerging digital and network technologies for the creation and dissemination of cultural content informed by architecture. The team maintains productive research partnerships with industry and government in developing digital and hybrid applications for the documentation and representation of architectural heritage, remote collaborative research and training environments and new media tool customization and development.
Science of Imagination Lab   Instantiated models of how people create things in their visual imaginations using a combination of experimental and computational methods
Mathematical Cognition Lab   Empirical research and modelling of cognitive processes involved in real-world tasks such as mathematics
Speech Perception Lab Audio labs Investigation and modelling of phonetic and prosodic factors underlying the perception of spoken language
Advanced Real-Time Simulation (ARS) Lab Computer cluster, visualization system Investigation of automatic generation of executable models derived from systems specifications. This research is based on the Discrete EVent System specification (DEVS) formalism and integrates the simulation results obtained with powerful 3-D visualization facilities.
