Bloorview Research Institute

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, Toronto, Ontario
What the facility does

Specialized and state-of-the-art clinical research facility dedicated to improving the lives of those with disabilities and complex disorders

Areas of expertise

Holland Bloorview’s core research facilities combine state-of-the-art equipment and expert staff to support clinical research or business needs of public and private sector clients.

The research MRI facility hosts a dedicated Siemens 3T PRISMA MRI that is solely used for research. The imaging facility is able to provide advanced imaging for clinical trials, research protocols and 3rd party services in various indications and boasts specialized software and hardware to scan nearly any region of the body including neuro, abdominal, musculoskeletal and is capable of various methods of advanced imaging such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging and spectroscopy. Notably, the facility is the first in Canada that is fully customizable, child-friendly and accessible.

Holland Bloorview is also home to a world-class neuromodulation and neurostimulation program with expert staff that can provide transcranial magnetic and transcranial electrical stimulation in a wide range of diagnoses such as stroke, movement disorders, dementia/cognitive impairment, pain, concussion, stroke and much more.

State-of-the-art interventional physical therapy equipment also positions Holland Bloorview as one of a handful of institutions across Canada that has access to equipment that can enable gait training and analysis for able-bodied and those with physical disabilities.

Holland Bloorview provides these services to clients in the public and private sectors whether for clinical research or business needs. We utilize rapid and streamlined contracts and budgets to ensure access to our services is efficient and timely.

Research services
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) – 3T Siemens PRISMA is available for private, public and non-profit sector research use in various clinical indications. Our MRI facility has specialized software and hardware to scan nearly any region of the body including neuro, abdominal, musculoskeletal and capable of various methods of advanced imaging such as fMRI, diffusion tensor imaging and spectroscopy.
  • Neuromodulation/Neurostimulation via Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) – Available for private, public and non-profit sector research use in various clinical indications (chronic pain, concussion, brain injury, stroke, movement disorders). Our brain stimulation facility has a Magstim Super Rapid Plus with air-cooled and sham trial coils for repetitive TMS including theta-burst capability, a MagStim Bi-Stim System for single and dual-pulse stimulation protocols, Brainsight Neuronavigation for MRI guided rTMS, magnetically shielded 128-channel and 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) systems for simultaneous brain stimulation and recording and brain-state informed brain stimulation. We are also equipped with multiple Soterix Medical 2-channel and 5-channel transcranial electrical stimulation devices for high definition tDCS, tACS and tRNS and neurotargeting systems.
  • Physiological Gait Training for Persons with Limited Mobility – Lokomat Robotic Gait Trainer – Available for private, public and non-profit sector research use in various neuromotor conditions, pediatrics (ages ~5 years and up) and adults (cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis). Our Lokomat Pro has both the adult and pediatric size robotic legs to enable use across the age span.
  • Physiological Data Collection – Our facility enables physiological data collection through two devices; 1) the RJL Systems Bioimpedance Analysis (BIA) which provides segmental body composition measures for lean soft tissue and fat mass, and 2) the Finapres NOVA which is a hemodynamic monitoring system providing beat-to-beat blood pressure and heart rate measurements. Both devices provide non-invasive and accessible modalities for collecting physiological measures that are comparable to gold standard methods (i.e. DXA and invasive arterial and central venous pressure monitoring).
