Human Machine Lab

Ontario Tech University (University of Ontario Institute of Technology), Oshawa, Ontario
What the facility does

Interdisciplinary research that aims to design computer systems around human needs and capabilities while maintaining human-level intelligence.

Areas of expertise

The Human Machine Lab is an interdisciplinary research laboratory, dedicated to designing computer systems tailored around human needs and capabilities while ensuring human-equivalent intelligence. The laboratory features three prominent research programs, focused on cybersecurity, data privacy in companion robots and smart toys, and human social values and skills for information technologies.

The Cybersecurity research program, led by Dr. Miguel Vargas Martin, aims to enrich cybersecurity efforts through analyzing memorability of system assigned passwords at the time of creation, by studying the brain waves generated upon seeing a password for the first time. In addition, the program investigates authentication techniques.

The Data Privacy in Social Robots and Smart Toys program, directed by Dr. Patrick Hung, studies a privacy protection framework for companion robots and smart toys. The goal of the program’s research is to develop a data privacy protection engine for culture-aware robots and smart toys. It enables users to control their privacy in Human Robot Interaction (HRI) by specifying their preferences.

The Human Social Values and Skills for Information Technologies program, led by Dr. Stephen Marsh, is focused on computational trust, comfort reasoning methodologies, device comfort, regret management, reputation and trust management, trust and distrust in security settings, and the application of social collective knowledge to information management.
